Harvard Business School, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center

Location: Allston, Massachusetts
Owner: Harvard Business School
Client: Lee Kennedy Co Inc.
Architect: Goody Clancy Associates
Engineer: Vanderweil Power Group

Project Summary

The new 90,000 SF executive education building known as the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Center is four-stories high and houses flexible classrooms, reception space, project rooms and a dining facility. State Electric’s project scope at the Chao Center includes the building’s primary and emergency power systems, lighting systems and fire alarm systems. Extensive tel/data and audio-visual networks are being installed throughout the facility to meet dynamic communication and audio-visual requirements. Custom lighting fixtures are a main focal point in the entry ways and main hub area. State Electric is also installing courtyard and walkway lighting to connect the Chao Center with the rest of Harvard Business School. This two-year project finished in April 2016.

Challenge

The installation of underground sleeves in the basement structural slab between two steel mats was an obstacle. Trimble layout and ground conditions were made all the more difficult by the extreme weather experienced during the winter of 2014.

Response

State Electric coordinated with both Lee Kennedy and the structural engineering team to facilitate timely and quality installation during extreme diverse weather condition and engineering constraints.
