MIT Central Utilities Plant

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Owner: MIT
Client: Bond Brothers
Engineer: Vanderweil Power Group

Project Summary

This project entails the upgrade of four existing chilled water pumps. The new, 500HP electric chilled water pumps, controlled via four new stand-alone, glycol cooled VFD units remotely located, have increased the capacity of the system as designed. Existing conduit racks and cable trays were used to route power throughout the plant and were required to be systematically isolated, de-energized, temporarily re-routed, tested and re-energized while the newly designed electrical system was built. This three-phase project started in January 2015 and finished July 2015.

Challenge

Meeting the aggressive seven-month schedule while working in a fully active and functioning plant¬† without disrupting the campus’s day-to-day operations was imperative.

Response

State Electric participated in extensive preplanning and coordination to facilitate the necessary work to meet the project schedule.
